ENplus A1 wood pellets are the cleanest and most strictly controlled wood pellets you can buy for your pellet stove or pellet outdoor fireplace. You’ll see the quality mark on almost every bag, but what it actually guarantees is unclear to many people. In this guide you’ll read what ENplus A1 means, how it compares to DINplus and the A2 and B classes, and why white premium pellets are such a good match.

What is the ENplus A1 quality mark?

The ENplus A1 quality mark is a European quality label that guarantees the highest quality wood pellets. The label was created in 2010 by the European Pellet Council as a single uniform standard for all of Europe. It sets strict requirements for clean combustion, consistent efficiency and low emissions of harmful substances.

ENplus monitors the entire chain, from raw material to the bag at your home. Every producer of certified wood pellets receives their own ENplus number, which keeps the origin of the pellets traceable. The purest A1 pellets are made from clean residual streams from the wood industry, such as sawdust. That means no extra trees need to be felled and sustainability remains the basis of this fuel.

What requirements do ENplus A1 pellets meet?

ENplus A1 pellets meet fixed limit values for moisture, ash, efficiency and size. These limits determine how cleanly and efficiently the pellet burns:

• Moisture content: maximum 10%.
• Ash content: maximum 0.7%.
• Calorific value: 4.6 to 5.3 kWh/kg.
• Diameter: 6 or 8 mm.
• Raw material: clean, untreated wood without glue or binders.
• Traceability: each producer has their own ENplus number.

A low moisture content ensures higher heat output and less smoke. A low ash content means less residue and therefore less cleaning of your stove. All ENplus A1 wood pellets in our range meet these limits, so you always know exactly what you’re getting.

ENplus A1, A2 and B: the difference between the classes

The ENplus label has three classes: A1, A2 and B. The class determines how strict the requirements are and what the pellets can be used for:

• ENplus A1: the strictest class, with an ash content up to 0.7% and only clean wood. Ideal for domestic use in a pellet stove and pellet outdoor fireplace.
• ENplus A2: a higher ash content up to 1.2% and a mix of wood types allowed. Suitable for pellet boilers that heat an entire house.
• ENplus B: the industrial class with an ash content of up to 2.0%, may contain bark and is not intended for domestic use.

For home use, choose ENplus A1. These pellets burn the cleanest and keep your stove or outdoor fireplace in the best condition for the longest time.

ENplus A1 or DINplus: what’s the difference?

ENplus and DINplus are two separate quality marks that both guarantee top quality. DINplus is issued by the German TÜV and has existed for more than 15 years, with an emphasis on clean, untreated wood. ENplus also covers the entire supply chain, including storage and traceability.

Neither certification is better than the other: they guarantee a comparable quality level. Many premium pellets therefore carry both labels. If you see either certification on the bag, you’re good to go with certified pellets.

A quality mark tells you everything about the quality, but you can also see something from the pellet itself: the colour.

White or brown pellets: what does the colour say about the quality?

The colour of a pellet reveals the raw material it’s made from. That difference determines how cleanly and how long the pellet burns:

• White pellets consist of 100% softwood such as spruce and pine, without bark. As a result, they are lighter in colour, leave little ash behind and burn cleanly.
• Brown pellets contain a mix with hardwood or bark. This composition gives a darker colour, more ash and soot, but often a longer burn time and a lower price.

For domestic use, white wood pellets are the cleanest and most economical option. Do note: colour alone is no guarantee. A white pellet without a quality mark can still be disappointing. The ENplus A1 certification does give that certainty, because white softwood pellets match the A1 requirements exactly.

Why white ENplus A1 pellets are the best choice for your stove and outdoor fireplace

White ENplus A1 pellets combine high efficiency with minimal smoke and little ash. These properties make them highly versatile:

• Minimal smoke, so no nuisance for the neighbours.
• Very little ash, so less maintenance for your stove or outdoor heater.
• High efficiency, so lower fuel costs in the long run.

It’s precisely this low-smoke combustion that makes these certified pellets the ideal fuel for a pellet outdoor stove. Prefer a more casual fire in the garden? The same pellet also works perfectly in a smokeless fire bowl. That makes ENplus A1 wood pellets not only sustainable, but also an efficient alternative to traditional firewood.

Recognising ENplus A1 on the bag

You can recognise ENplus A1 by the ENplus logo with the class designation A1 and a unique ID number. That number consists of a country code plus digits, for example NL314, and links the bag to a certified producer. If there is no logo or number on the packaging, the quality guarantee is missing. Also check whether “100% softwood” and “without bark” is printed on the bag.

Loose 15 kg bags or a full pallet: which size suits you?

You can buy ENplus A1 wood pellets in individual 15 kg bags or by the pallet. The right quantity depends on how often you burn:

• Loose bags (15 kg): convenient for the pellet outdoor stove, the fire bowl or to try the quality first. Loose bags are light to lift and require little storage space. With a pellet storage box you can keep 2 bags of wood pellets (about 30 kg) dry and within easy reach next to your stove.
• Per pallet (66 bags, around 990 kg): the lowest price per kg for anyone heating an entire winter with a pellet stove. Choose a pallet if you have a dry storage space or garage for your stock.

Good to know: wood pellets are cheaper in summer and early autumn than during peak demand in winter. By stocking up before the heating season, you benefit from a lower price per bag and are assured of the same premium quality all year round.
