What is a fire bowl?
A fire bowl is an open metal bowl for burning fire outdoors. The bowl stands on legs or a plinth and uses firewood or wood pellets as fuel. A fire bowl creates ambience, pleasant warmth and cosiness on enjoyable evenings in your garden or on the patio. Fire bowls function as both a heat source and a decorative feature. With a grill grate, the bowl serves as an open barbecue for preparing and cooking meat, fish and vegetables over an open fire.

What should you look for when choosing a fire bowl?
A good fire bowl meets 5 key criteria:
- Material: steel, Corten and cast iron each have their own strengths in terms of durability and appearance.
- Diameter: 60 cm is sufficient for 2–4 people; a diameter of 80 cm or larger suits bigger groups.
- Use: fire bowls for ambience can be compact; a fire bowl BBQ requires extra space for a grill grate or griddle.
- Placement: place the fire bowl on a solid base of stone or concrete, away from combustible materials.
- Accessories: choose a fire bowl with options for grill grate, lid and spark screen.
With these 5 points you can make a good choice between our products.
Best materials for a fire bowl
Our products and fire bowls are available in different materials. The material determines lifespan, appearance and maintenance:
- Black coated steel: light and affordable metal with a heat-resistant coating. A steel fire bowl is low-maintenance, heat-resistant and fits into any modern garden design.
- Corten steel: develops a protective rust layer when exposed to moisture, which stops further corrosion. Corten fire bowls develop a warm, modern and industrial look with use.
- Stainless steel: stainless-steel fire bowls are rust-resistant with a modern look. Stainless steel discolours when exposed to high heat.
What size fire bowl suits your garden or patio?
The diameter of a fire bowl depends on the number of people and the outdoor space. We offer 2 sizes in our range:
- 40 cm: the Embra with Ø 45 cm is suitable for 2–4 people. Fits on a small patio and is light enough to take with you.
- 60 cm: the basic 60 cm Fire Bowl suits 4–6 people, ideal for a large patio or spacious garden. 60 cm fire bowls often form the natural focal point of the evening.
For 6+ people in a large garden, fire bowls of 80 cm or larger are suitable. 80 cm is popular in the Netherlands, but for home use our 40 and 60 cm models are more than sufficient. A fire bowl table or a fire bowl on legs changes the working height. A fire basket directs the fire upwards; fire bowls spread the fire wider. Fire bowls make the fire the focal point of your garden.
BBQ and cooking on your fire bowl
A fire bowl BBQ combines ambience with outdoor cooking. With the right accessories you can prepare meat, vegetables and the tastiest dishes directly over the open fire. Customers mainly use their fire bowl as a barbecue for evenings with friends.
A grill grate sits directly on the bowl and is suitable for steaks, chicken and fish. A griddle with raised edge works well for vegetables, eggs and dishes with sauce. A grill plate is a flat version without an edge. A tripod supports a hanging kettle or pan above the flames, ideal for stews or heating soup. With a lid you retain heat and create an oven effect for slow roasting meat or toasting marshmallows. A ring around the bowl protects against sparks and helps retain heat.
Safe use of your fire bowl
Using a fire bowl safely prevents fire hazards. Follow 6 rules for safe use so you can enjoy your products with peace of mind:
- Solid base: make sure the fire bowl stands on stone, tiles or concrete. A wooden deck is a fire hazard without a heat-resistant plate underneath.
- Combustible materials: keep at least 2 metres distance from fences, trees and garden furniture.
- Bucket of water: also make sure a bucket of water or a fire extinguisher is within reach. Accidents can happen quickly.
- Sparks: use a spark screen in windy conditions. Burn with the wind blowing away from the house so fire and smoke drift away.
- Use dry wood: only burn clean, dry wood or wood pellets. Treated wood, plastic or waste is not allowed and produces harmful smoke.
- Sturdy base: check that the base with three or four legs stands firmly so the fire bowl cannot tip over.
A fire bowl is allowed in the Netherlands and Belgium, provided there is no local burning ban in place. Check your municipality’s regulations. In your garden you may only burn clean, untreated firewood or certified wood pellets. Burning waste, treated wood or leaf litter is prohibited.
Maintenance and service life of your fire bowl
Good maintenance extends the lifespan of fire bowls and prevents rust. With regular maintenance, our products last for years. Follow 4 maintenance rules:
- Removing ash residues: remove ash residues after each session to prevent corrosion and build-up.
- Protective cover: cover the fire bowl in rain or snow to keep out the elements.
- Touching up the coating: touch up the coating when scratches or wear become visible.
- Clean regularly: brush the inside and outside with a soft brush to remove deposits.
The downside of fire bowls: outdoor use means exposure to moisture. A corten steel fire bowl forms its own protective layer; a powder-coated steel fire bowl needs periodic touch-ups to prevent rust. A wood storage tower next to the fire bowl keeps fuel dry. Good wood storage keeps wood dry for a clean fire. Our products are designed to last for years.
