What are wood pellets?
Wood pellets, also known as pellet granules, are small cylindrical pellets made from compressed sawdust from the wood industry. The sawdust is pressed under high pressure, without glue or binders. Production uses waste wood: sawdust and wood waste that would otherwise be discarded. This makes wood pellets an environmentally friendly choice for the environment and climate sustainability: no extra trees need to be felled for them.
Good wood pellets have a moisture content of a maximum of 10% and a calorific value of 4.2 to 4.8 kWh per kilo. Premium softwood pellets reach up to 5.0 kWh/kg. Thanks to their compact shape and low moisture content, pellets ensure optimal combustion with virtually no smoke or ash.
Our wood pellets: Energy Excellent and Verba Premium
We sell two types of wood pellets, both ENplus A1 certified and made from 100% pure softwood without glue or bark. Both products are suitable for your pellet stove, our pellet outdoor fireplaces and smokeless fire bowls. Unsure which pellets to choose? We are happy to help you decide.
- Energy Excellent is our premium pellet, produced in the Netherlands from 100% pure softwood. With a high output of approx. 5.0 kWh/kg, a low ash content of 0.3% and a moisture content of ≤8–10%, you get more heat from every bag of Energy pellets and less work dealing with ash. Ideal if you burn daily and want to get the most out of your pellet stove.
- Verba Premium offers reliable premium quality for daily use. Made from 100% softwood without bark, with approx. 4.8 kWh/kg, ash content around 0.7% and moisture content ≤9–10%. This makes Verba Premium wood pellets a cost-effective alternative if you’re looking for a good price-performance ratio for your pellet stove or outdoor stove.
White softwood pellets vs. darker pellets
White pellets are lighter in colour because they are made from pure softwood without bark. Darker pellets often contain hardwood or bark residues, which result in more ash and a lower calorific value. For most pellet stoves and outdoor stoves, white pellets are the best choice in terms of quality and efficiency.
The ENplus A1 and DINplus quality marks guarantee that your wood pellets meet strict European standards for clean combustion, calorific value and ash content.
Wood pellets as an alternative to fossil fuels
Heating with wood pellets can be up to 54% cheaper than heating with natural gas. Pellets also burn more efficiently than firewood: the energy density is 5.2 MWh per ton, about 25% higher than open-firewood. That means more heat per kilo and an efficient alternative to oil, gas and standard wood.
Pellets are also better for the environment because they are made from residual wood. The CO2 released during combustion equals what the tree absorbed during its growth, so there is no net burden on the climate. The price does fluctuate by season: in summer the price is lower than during peak demand in winter, so buying pellets for the winter in advance is more economical. Pellet stoves are fully permitted and considered a sustainable choice, because they emit far less fine dust than traditional wood stoves.
For which stove or fireplace do you choose wood pellets?
- Pellet stove indoors: the most common application, with an efficiency of 80 to 90% and automatic pellet feed for constant heat output and ease of use.
- Pellet outdoor fireplace: low-smoke burning in the garden or on the patio, without gas or electricity. View our range of pellet outdoor fireplace models.
- Fire bowl: a smokeless fire bowl runs on pellets, firewood or charcoal and creates an atmospheric play of flames.
- Pizza oven: special pellets provide the right heat and a light wood-smoked flavour for your pizza.
Consumption and burn time: how many wood pellets do you need?
With a 15 kg bag of wood pellets you can typically heat your pellet stove for 8 to 12 hours on a medium setting. A pellet outdoor stove uses less and burns for about 2 hours per fill. For an entire winter, an average household uses 1,000 to 2,500 kilos, or roughly 65 to 165 bags of 15 kg.
Heating with pellets also has disadvantages: you need dry storage space for your bags, the price varies by season, and your pellet stove requires periodic maintenance such as emptying the ash pan and annual sweeping.
Buy wood pellets per bag, pallet or bulk
We supply wood pellets in different packaging options, so you can always choose the size that matches your usage:
- Per bag (15 kg): ideal to try out the quality of our pellets or for low consumption in an outdoor fireplace or fire bowl.
- Per pallet (66 bags / ~990 kg): the most economical packaging per kilo and enough for a whole winter of heating.
- Bulk deliveries: available for B2B customers and companies via a personalised quote. This allows businesses to have large numbers of bags delivered efficiently.
For larger orders you automatically receive an attractive tiered price at checkout. Feel free to combine your order with other products such as firewood or accessories for a single delivery and extra convenience.
Storing wood pellets: how to keep them in good condition
- Keep dry: wood pellets fall apart on contact with moisture, so always store your bags in a dry place.
- Enclosed space: store your bags in a shed, garage or covered storage area.
- Not on the ground: place the pallet on a base or wooden pallet so that moisture from the floor cannot reach it.
- Packaging closed: only open a bag when you need it, so the moisture content of your pellets stays low.
